Guiding Principles

In addition to the Rebecca A. Copeland Fellowship at the University of Michigan, the RAC Fund for Social Justice provides financial and programatic support for organizations that reflect Rebecca’s philanthropic and personal priorities. These include, but are not limited to, access to basic needs such as healthcare, quality education, safe physical environments, and more. If you know of an organization that reflects these priorities and would benefit from learning more about our funding process, please fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page.

Becca’s Book House + Becca’s Bench at Camp Marimeta

Becca was a shining Marimeta camper from 2001-2007 and a counselor in 2009. Her curiosity and love of learning were second to none, and she was an avid reader at rest hour. In her memory, Marimeta established a "take one give one" library at camp,

In Becca’s honor, you can purchase a book(s) to donate to the library. Because Rebecca was a passionate supporter of buying local, we encourage you to visit your local bookstore. We have selected two (listed below) where we have arranged for them to hold the books with the code “Becca” for in-person shopping, or by writing “Becca” in the notes section at check-out for online ordering. The Copelands will pick up all orders at both stores at the end of May. Alternatively, you can shop online at bookshop.org which supports local bookstores.

Any orders from the bookstore of your choice can also be shipped directly to camp at the address: Jami Kasle, c/o Camp Marimeta, 3782 Gaffney Dr., Eagle River, WI 54521

These books will fill the shelves of Becca’s Book House that overlooks Lake Meta that her family and “sisters of the summer” established in her memory.

If possible, please make Becca proud and support a local bookstore. Challenge yourself to NOT use Amazon!

CAMP FOR ALL KIDS SCHOLARSHIP

Founded in 1997, Camp for All Kids provides camperships that enable youth from historically under-resourced communities to experience overnight summer camp, providing a safe environment that fosters fellowship and social-emotional development. By bridging the opportunity gap and facilitating a racially diverse camp community, the Camp for All Kids experience benefits our campership recipients and the entire camp community.

Rebecca was a strong believer in equal opportunity for all. She enjoyed 10 unforgettable summers at Marimeta, and we are proud to provide the same opportunity to those that may not have had a chance otherwise. So far, the Fund has sent 5 girls to Marimeta over the past two summers.

CHRT Internship

The Center for Health and Research Transformation (CHRT) is a nonprofit health policy center at the University of Michigan. CHRT works to transform data and research into useful information that can be used to craft policies and practices that improve the health of people and communities.

Rebecca Copeland worked as an intern with CHRT from 2019-2021 while she was a graduate student at the University of Michigan Schools of Public Health and Public Policy. Rebecca was dedicated to improving health and health systems for vulnerable populations. At CHRT, she brought enthusiasm and excellence to her work and was immediately identified as a highly capable analyst. Because of these qualities, Rebecca was assigned to many projects, including those focused on improving access to services in the public mental health system. In addition to these contributions, in early 2020 Rebecca worked with CHRT to support the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in their efforts to track crucial funding for COVID-19 testing, tracking and isolation activities.

Following her tragic death, in 2022 CHRT named a summer internship in Rebecca’s memory. The Rebecca Copeland Memorial Health Policy Internship at the Center for Health and Research Transformation now recruits high-achieving individuals committed to improving health and social justice. The internship is generously supported by the Rebecca A. Copeland Fund for Social Justice.
