The overall mission of the RAC Fund for Social Justice is to keep Rebecca’s dream for health equity alive.

2023 ScHOLARSHIP WINNER SPOTLIGHT: Jennie Scheerer
FORD SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY, CLASS OF 2024

Jennie is currently a third year dual Master of Public Health (Health Behavior and Health Education) and Master of Public Policy student at the University of Michigan. Her research interests lie in the intersections between maternal and reproductive health, anti-racism, and US domestic policy. She strongly believes that every person with a uterus should have access to safe and affordable healthcare.

Jennie’s commitment to finding evidence-based solutions to closing the gap between the demographic disparities that exist within healthcare led her to pursue the Rebecca A. Copeland Internship at the Center for Health and Research Transformation (CHRT) throughout the summer of 2023. After graduation, she hopes to use the tools she learned at CHRT to produce rigorous research within a government institution or think-tank to inform dynamic policy that meets the diverse needs of our country’s population.

2023 ScHOLARSHIP WINNER SPOTLIGHT: Olivia morris
FORD SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY, CLASS OF 2025

Olivia Morris is pursuing dual degrees as a Master in Public Policy and Master of Social Work. Her interdisciplinary studies shaped her desire to establish health policy reform with a focus on multi-faceted health interventions. Prior to graduate school, Olivia served as a mental health counselor for unhoused clients with concurrent mental and physical health diagnoses in Los Angeles, CA, developing a commitment to making state-wide healthcare systems more equitable.

Most recently, Olivia served as the legislative intern for the Michigan 47th House District State Representative Carrie Rheingans. She supported the office’s introduction of MiCare–state-based, single-payer healthcare system that would provide universal coverage to all Michiganders–and is finalizing two opioid reform bills that focus on harm reduction. Too often has the cost of healthcare prevented vulnerable people from accessing necessary health services, an ever-present sentiment expressed by Olivia’s clients over the years. After graduation, Olivia plans to implement health policy reforms on the state-level that address intersectional health challenges faced by America’s most vulnerable people.

Her goal for the future is to leverage resources to eliminate health disparities and improve the health outcomes of marginalized and vulnerable communities. This is informed by Huda's background, education, and professional experiences, which have provided her with a unique understanding of the social, political, and economic dynamics of disadvantaged communities that are often overlooked or unsupported by programs and policies.

Huda's research interests fall in understanding racial health inequities in Latin America, with a particular interest in Brazil. Huda's outcomes of interest include maternal and child health and infectious disease prevention.
